Recital Prep, Part 1: Stuff Parents Need to Know

 


All right, piano parents! Recital time is just around the corner, and it's your budding musician's time to shine! 

   It's a busy time of year, I know. But please take a minute to read this so you can help your young pianists to really shine their best  at the upcoming recital. :) 

  •      I know you're probably going to think this is obvious... but please make sure your child is practicing. It's not going to help their confidence if they lollygag about practice until the day before the recital. It's one of those times when it's perfectly OK to be the mean mom (or dad). Trust me, it will be worth it. 
  •     Make sure you and your family arrive at the church on time (a few minutes before 2:30 P.M.). Check the address ahead of time, so you know where you're going! 
  •      Please be respectful of church property while we are there, and remind your children not to run in the sanctuary, play with things in the church, etc.
  •      It's cold and flu season! If there's sanitizer available (I don't know if there will be or not), please use it.  
  •      Help your child feel relaxed before the recital. Many children get very nervous before a recital, which doesn't help them play their best! All your children are prepared for this. And, much as we'd like it if everything went perfectly, mistakes do happen and they're not a big deal. Remind them of these things. They will be fine! 
  •      Please clap for each student when they finish playing. All of them have put their best effort into this!
  •      I'm encouraging your children to compliment each other after the recital, so if you could also encourage this mentality, that would be great.
  •      Feel free to invite grandparents and other family members! But if they can't come, I will be videoing the whole recital and sharing the video with you, my piano families, later. (And I will make sure we have the reliable camera this time -- we ran into a technical glitch with last spring's video, if you're wondering why you never received a link for it.) And speaking of videos...
  •      If you can't make it live to the recital (especially for health reasons), please give me as much advance notice as you can. Then, so your child's hard work doesn't go to waste, please send me a video of your child playing their piece within the following week, and I will add this video to the main recital video. If you do video, they should wear casual-dressy clothes, say their piece names, play, and then bow, just like they would in-person! 
  •      After the recital, we will be having some snacks and a time to visit. This is a great time for you to connect with other families like yours! Please bring a plate of snack finger food.

Gloves: For More than Keeping Your Child's Hands Warm

   Snow swirls around the streets of Leningrad, Russia. Pedestrians pull winter coats tighter around themselves. Car lights shine through the flurries. In one large, multi-story building, a window on the corner of the building is lit. Inside the room, frost decorates the window panes. The only occupant – a young man, with a spark of life in his blue eyes – turns out music, gorgeous music, on the upright piano against the wall. When Music Teachers Meet

It was Sunday evening, and various members of  PMTA  were gathered at one member's home for the Annual General Meeting. Since I've only been a member for less than a year, this was the first time I'd been to one of their meetings. As we were setting up for supper, I asked the president, "So, what goes on in the meeting?"    She looked at me, and her face instantly displayed drama. With gusto, she replied, "You'll be thrilled, and chilled, and ... bored out of your mind!"    LOL!    That's the great thing about hanging around with other artistic minds. There's plenty of room for drama. :)    Seriously, though, I like getting together with other music teachers, because all of us can talk for hours about music. :) It was a lot of fun comparing notes back and forth and getting to know some of the other teachers.
