New Series: Musical Memories

So ... I got no feedback on the "Listen!" series. None whatsoever. So I figured I'd write a little about some of my memories as a child being dragged to music lessons, and later as a teen discovering the joy of making music for the first time. After all, don't we all like to read about other people's lives? ;)

Welcome to my story -- how God led me to be a piano teacher and more.

I was around 8 years old when one of my mom's friends suggested putting me in piano class. This friend was enrolling her two oldest in the MYC program, and she explained to Mom that music is beneficial for the brain, and that learning the piano first gave a solid foundation for learning other instruments. So Mom enrolled me in the same class as my two friends.

I was thrilled! I didn't know the first thing about music -- besides the fact that I liked it, as all children do.  At that point, I had one of those Fisher Price xylophones. What a racket I must have created in my room with that little toy the night before piano classes were to begin! Because I do remember exuberantly playing it, and singing along to my made-up tunes, with all my eight-year-old energy. (And you parents know how much energy and eight-year-old can have!)

My first lesson was uneventful enough. The day after that, that my parents bought a digital keyboard. There was no going back now -- we were committed to three years of piano training for me.

It didn't take very long for my young enthusiasm to wear off. The main thing was practice. I don't remember crying on my way to music lessons, but like most children, I didn't enjoy practice. Or theory, for that matter -- it was too much like school. If it had been up to me, I would have dropped piano before the year was up.

But it wasn't up to me. And Mom wasn't about to be swayed by my reluctance. Because, by the time my first year was up, she had caught sight of a vision ...

   To Be Continued
